The Promise of Peace: Libra Season

Leo season reminds us to shine from the heart, Virgo asks us to tend to the divine details capable of holding that light. Now Libra season brings us to the place where our light meets the light of another. An encounter that holds the promise of peace…ideally.

What brings us to Libra season, well, the sun doesn’t just enter the sign of Libra we encounter the autumnal equinox, the threshold from summer into fall. This seasonal threshold is where day and night appear almost equal almost like celestial symmetry. A pause between what has been growing and what is beginning to recede. When the sun moves crosses this threshold, symbolically the scales feel balanced.

Balance Is Bogus Perfection

This balance though is a temporary moment and if you have ever sat with me in conversations around this word, you have heard me say ‘balance is bullsh**”. Listen, we are given 365 opportunities to live our lives each solar year and only two of those provide moments to where light and dark stand almost equally beside one another. Nature, she teases us with this potential, however she herself does not remain suspended there. Change continues. The light continues to turn and shift. The days shorten, leaves release, and there is an invitation to move toward closure.

Hear what I am saying? Libra is almost always associated with balance, yet I don’t feel this is Libra’s invitation or promise for that matter.

Balance sounds like this perfection, a position we are to find and somehow hold. If we can just organize our lives in just the right way, distribute our energy evenly, keep everyone happy and make all the perfect choices, then we can say we are successful because the scales finally stop tipping one way or the other.

Well, if you are living life then you know first hand this is far from how life works.

Have you ever heard the only constant is change? Relations, needs, energy, seasons, life it all changes. There are times, seasons where more is asked of us and times where we can actually return and restore. Sometimes life asks someone to carry more than another and at times we need to be the one generating and producing, but at times we also need to be able to receive.  It is almost as if there is a divine paradox where sometimes the peaceful move is to stay and other times our peace requires protection that can look like a boundary, a value, a difficult conversation or the courage to leave when that thing no longer honors who we are.

Libra offers us something far more sustainable than perfect balance, Libra offers the promise of peace.

Peace As A Promise

Peace here is not the opposite of or absence of tension. Nor is peace maintained through silence, accommodation or leaving ourselves out of the relationship. Libra offers  us a way to meet life, a practice of remaining in relationship with ourselves while also staying open to one another. The etymology of the word provides gives meaning to this through kinship, agreement, security, pact and reconciliation.

For me I have to wonder if the deeper word here is equanimity, or contented soul. Equanimity is the capacity to remain present while the scales move. It allows us to encounter complexity without immediately forcing a solution. It gives us room to hold more than one truth, to listen without disappearing and to honor another person’s experience without abandoning our own.

Perhaps this idea that Libra season means we can live a balanced life isn’t the promise, maybe we can consider Libra season as a reminder that peace remains available even as life continues to change. That there is a rhythm of peace in the ebb and flow.

Astrology as Care: The Self Enters Relationship

Approaching astrology as care is a way of not asking any of us to perform the qualities of a sign, rather it is more of a creative process to understand all that life is offering to us. Libra season might feel like we need to be more agreeable, pleasing, attractive, social or easy to be around. That though feels as if it is just another standard to measure ourselves against – like the idea of living a ‘balanced life’.

Astrology as care offers an orientation. Helping us notice what the season is illuminating and consider what might need our attention. Libra season asks us to explore how we are relating.

How do I experience myself when another person is present?

Am I able to listen to someone else without immediately overriding what I know to be true?

Can I trust myself enough to soften where and when it is safe?

What is it like to remain open to another point of view without becoming unrooted from my own?

Where am I creating genuine peace, and where am I maintaining the appearance of harmony by leaving myself out?

Relational questions also begin within ourselves. The relationship we have with ourselves enters every relationship we build. We bring it into our partnerships, friendships, families, work, communities and the ways we participate in the world.

Libra As Care

This Astrology As Care blog series started with Leo, as it is ruled by the sun. Then Virgo which is ruled by Mercury. Now Libra as it is ruled by Venus. While that is the planetary order we even see the symbolic unfolding that in tending to the divine details now allows us to step out into the world and be in relationship with life.

Virgo helps us gather the evidence of our lives asking us to discern what nourishes us, what depletes us, what requires our attention and what needs refinement. Virgo helps to build the container capable of holding the light that Leo reminds us is already there. LIbra’s promise of peace follows Virgo’s offering so beautifully.

Libra now asks if this cared for self can enter relationship without disappearing.

Venus Provides A Compass

As noted just above, Libra is ruled by Venus and rather than go on about her brilliance for paragraphs at a time, she is the ruler of my own chart. So perhaps this is why I am value-centric in my work that extends into desires/wants, beauty, boundaries and authentic alignment. If you want a reminder visit my post Values & The Art of Alignment – Venus Style.

Rather than repeat myself, know that Venus gives us an important bridge into Libra as Values orient us toward what matters. Libra asks us to consider what happens when what matters to me encounters what matters to you.

If my desires matter, so do yours. My needs belong in relationship and so do yours. My own lived experience deserves to be honored and well, your experiences can very well be different from mine. This is the relational art of Libra. It isn’t always even, balanced or even comfortable. Libra also is not interested in keeping things pretty and pleasing on the surface.

Venus becomes the compass as she helps us recognize what we value, what we appreciate, what draws us closer and what makes life feel beautiful. You know that saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Libra then takes these Venusian elements into relationship and asks whether the space between us is capable of holding them.

Does the relationship honor what I value?

Can desire be spoken without shame?

Can care move in more than one direction?

Am I okay with difference existing without automatically becoming disconnection?

Is there enough trust for honesty, and enough honesty for repair and enough freedom for both people to remain fully themselves?

From this perspective beauty becomes more than appearance. Beauty is the felt experience of coherence. Something feels beautiful because there is truth in it. Because what is visible and what is valued begin to belong together.

Libra: Cardinal Air and the Courage to Meet

A little technicality for a moment. Libra is a cardinal air sign meaning cardinal is initiatory energy and Libra begins the drying season that comes with the air element. Air brings awareness, language, perspective, ideas and our ability to understand more than one point of view. Since cardinal energy initiates we cross a threshold into new movement.

What we have it not a quiet presence while everyone gets along, Libra is initiating relationship, beginning the conversation, offers an invitation, notices what is happening between people and things, considers how an encounter might become more respectful, more beautiful, more justified or more peaceful.

At Libra’s most nourishing, there is the capacity to see many sides create spaciousness. That first interpretation is not as trapping nor is the loudest voice or the belief that only one truth can exist.

Perspective

Every gift though can become distorted when it loses connection with the self. Perspective can become indecision. Consideration can become chronic accommodation. Diplomacy can become avoidance. Desire for harmony can turn into an exhausting responsibility for everyone else’s emotional weather.

Um hello my hello caretakers, helpers, therapists, teachers, mothers and anyone who learned to scan a room before checking in with themselves!!!

Sound familiar? Becoming so skilled at understanding why everyone else feels the way they do that we lose contact or connection to our own experience. Also known as keeping the peace except our bodies often know when that peace is costing too much.

Equanimity does not require neutrality. It doesn’t mean we don’t have a preference, take a position or experience anger. (Which Libra energy is very familiar with anger!!!) Equanimity helps us remain open without becoming unrooted.

The invitation is to be with others without abandoning ourselves. Receive experience without surrendering our own discernment. Care about relationship without becoming sole responsible for sustaining it.

Reciprocity Is Not A Perfect Exchange

Reciprocity is central to libra, but not to ask us to keep score.  A healthy relationship doesn’t mean there is an equal exchange at every moment. There are seasons when one person carries more because the other is grieving, ill, overwhelmed or simply needing the support. There are relationship where we offer different things because of our own strengths, capacities and roles differ from others. This is beautiful really – that we all have something different to offer.

Reciprocity is the felt knowledge that care moves in more than one direction. Instead of sameness it is knowing that our needs are not an inconvenience to the relationship. Curiosity doesn’t flow in just on direction or towards one person, responsibility can be shred and repair does not depend on one person doing all the emotional work. Receiving is just as welcoming as giving.

Out of Our Comfort Zone

When we are more comfortable being the one that cares for others, receiving can feel immensely vulnerable. Giving allows us to remain competent, useful, needed, maybe even keeps us thinking we are in control. Receiving though asks us to trust.

Trust is more than believing another person won’t disappoint us. Human beings will disappoint one another, that is just the human condition because we are all different. We miss cues, misunderstand, become defensive and bring our unfinished stories into the encounter.

Trust grows when there is enough safety for truth and enough care for repair. Being able to trust in another is so important just as trust in one’s self is equally important. We need an inner relationship that helps us recognize when we can soften, we it is time to speak up, when something needs more of our time and when the promos of peace has been confused with a request to tolerate harm.

Beauty As A Way of Tending the Threshold

There is something undeniably beautiful about the beginning of fall. The quality of light changes. The landscape warms into gold, amber and a deepening red just as the air begins to cool. We gather closer, we light candles earlier, we start making our home more comforting as the external world asks us to start inward.

Beauty Matters

Sure a lovely environment is going to ease grief, but beauty doesn’t erase the pain, conflict or uncertainty. Nor do we want to decorate the truth until it becomes easier to tolerate. Beauty can be a form of orientation It can remind the body that life still contains something worthy of our attention.

A table prepared for conversation A candle lit as evening arrives. A room arranged so the body can soften. A boundary spoken with care. A walk beneath a changing canopy of leaves. A moment when someone listens without immediately trying to fix or defend.

Each of these gestures won’t stop the season from changing actually they help us meet the change.

Closure & Renewal

Closure and renewal might sound like opposite, but actually closure creates the conditions for renewal.

When the leaves fall, nature is not falling us. The tree doesn’t loose its beauty because it no longer can hold what has completed its purpose.Something is actually being released, conserved, and something unseen is already preparing for another season.

Perhaps this is Libra’s most beautiful promise of peace because we can honor what is ending without losing trust in renewal.

The Gift of the Aries Full Moon

Every Libra season carries an Aries Full Moon which brings the relationship between self and other fully into view. Like every single year – if the Sun is in Libra, the full moon will be in Aries! Just to get a tad technical for a moment – the only way the moon is full is because it is 180º from the sun.

Libra can ask how do we meet? Aries then asks, who am I when I arrive?

Across this axis we encounter autonomy and belonging, instinct and consideration, self-trust and relational trust.

Without Aries, Libra can mistake accommodation for reciprocity. We can become highly attuned to the relationship while losing connection with our own self, the person we are bringing to the relationship.

Without Libra, Aries can mistake autonomy for freedom from relationship. We can act from instinct without considering the impact our choices have on the people and communities around us.

Together they complete the invitation. Bring your whole self to the encounter and allow the encounter to matter.

The full moon illuminates where we may be over identified with one side of the axis.

Have you been so focused on preserving connection that you have silenced your own truth?

Are you so committed to understanding everyone that you cannot identify what you want?

Aries brings the fire of the individual self. Libra creates the air that allows two distinct flames to breathe in the same space. This is relationship!

Where Does Libra Live in Your Life?

Everyone has Libra somewhere in their natal chart. You may not have a planet there, but everyone has Libra energy. For one we all move through Libra season together. The house Libra occupies shows the area of life where questions of reciprocity, trust, beauty, relationship, and equanimity are asking for our attention.

Looking here we aren’t trying to predict what will happen. It might give hints of the qualities but for this offering of Astrology as a practice of care, we look to it as another orientation point within the reflective landscape of your chart.

In my own chart, Libra is my rising sign so it occupies my First House. Relationship is how I understand myself and life. I notice what is happening around me, how people are responding and what might help create connection I have even joked that my tombstone will read ‘Teresa, she made everyone feel better’.

Sure this sensitivity is a gift and one I deeply respect, except for those moments where refinement was mandated. Just because you can see every side does not mean every side belongs to me. Creating peace can get misaligned to the point where someone begins to feel responsible for everyone’s comfort. Being deeply relational asks that I do not leave myself at the door.

I could go on about this in many ways, but let’s just say this might very well be my argument against Libra equalling balance. My own work is less about keeping the scales still and more about trusting myself while they move. Steadying my inner world to see the rhythm and feeling my own inner rhythm when the world feels steady.

Libra Through The Houses

As I have been mentioning in previous posts, each house describes a landscape of life. Libra shows where we encounter the art of relationship. Where beauty, trust, reciprocity, perspective and peace become a part of our practice.

Relating Through Presence: Rising/1st House

Libra in the First House brings relationship into identity, embodiment and the way we meet the world. There is a natural awareness of how you are perceived and a gift for helping others feel welcome. The care here is to remain connected to who you are beneath the reflections you receive from other people. Watching if you over adapt, accommodate or please is central. Though your nature will be naturally to please, adapts and accommodate. Quit the duality right?!?

Orientation: Who am I when I am not organizing myself around how I will be received?

Reciprocity: How can I consider another person without making their response the measure of my worth?

Relating Through Value: 2nd House

The Second House holds values, money, resources, self-worth and what helps us feel sustained. Libra here asks whether your exchanges reflect what you value. Beauty may be deeply nourishing, but peace also requires knowing what your time energy and gifts are worth.

Orientation: What do my choices reveal about what I genuinely value?

Reciprocity: Where are my resources moving in a mutual exchange, and where am I giving more than I can sustainably offer?

Relating Through Belonging: 4th House

The Fourth House brings us home to our family, ancestors, emotional foundations and private belonging or personal space. Libra here longs for a peaceful and beautiful home environment. Something to consider is that family harmony can be built around what no one is allowed to say. That pulls out the harm in harmony.

Orientation: What allows me to feel at peace and at hoe within myself?

Reciprocity: What would make honesty and care more mutually available within my closest relationships?

Relating Through Creation: 5th House

The Fifth House carries creativity, joy, play, pleasure and whole hearted self expression. Libra here brings beauty into what is created and often delights in sharing  authentically with another. The invitation of Libra is to let creativity become relational without turning it into a performance for approval. We shine our peace in the world allowing others a chance to also connect to this peace authentically.

Orientation: What feels beautiful or delightful simply because it brings me alive?

Reciprocity: Where can shared joy deepen connection without requiring either person to become less themselves?

Relating Through Daily Care: 6th House

The Sixth House includes work, health, service, routine and the maintenance of everyday life. Libra here notices fairness and cooperation within daily responsibilities. Peace is not created by a perfectly balanced schedule, but by rhythms that consider your energy alongside everything and everyone you care for.

Orientation: What are my daily obligations asking of my body, mind heart and soul?

Reciprocity: Where does practical care need to be shared rather than silently carried?

Relating Through Partnership: 7th House

Libra is at home in the landscape traditionally connected with the Seventh House. Here we have partnership, agreement, collaboration and the person sitting across from us. Relationship becomes a major path of self discovery. The invitation is more about cultivating partnerships where two whole people are allowed to co-exist and much less about finding the perfect match.

Orientation: What do my relationships reflect about the way I meet another?

Reciprocity: is there enough trust, truth and responsiveness for care to move in both directions?

Relating Through Intimacy: 8th House

The Eighth House takes us beneath the surface into trust, grief, vulnerability, shared resources, power and transformation. Libra here asks what fairness means when lives and resources become deeply intertwined. Reciprocity may require receiving support, naming unequal emotional labor or renegotiating the terms of intimacy.

Orientation: What do I need in order to feel safe enough for genuine intimacy?

Reciprocity: What am I sharing, carrying or managing that was never meant to be mind alone?

Relating Through Meaning: 9th House

The Ninth House includes belief, philosophy, travel, earning and the perspectives that enlarge our world and expand our world view. Libra here seeks wisdom through dialogue and encounter. Different ways of seeing can deepen meaning, provide openness does not require abandoning what your own lived experience has taught you.

Orientation: Which perspectives help me understand life more fully?

Reciprocity: Can I allow another worldview to influence me while remaining in relationship with what I know to be true?

Relating Through Contribution: 10th House

The Tenth House brings Libra into vocation, leadership, responsibility and public contribution. There may be a gift for mediation, collaboration, advocacy or creating beauty and coherence in the public sphere. The care is to ensure that reputation or approval does not become more important than relational integrity.

Orientation: What kind of peace am I helping create through the way I work and had?

Reciprocity: Do my professional relationships reflect the respect and values I want my contribution to embody?

Relating Through Larger Community: 11th House

The Eleventh House holds friendship, community, collective vision, and hopes for the future. Libra here understands that a beautiful future must be relationally created. Cooperation matters but belonging cannot require continual adaptation to the group.

Orientation: Where do I experience genuine belonging rather than simply being useful or agreeable?

Reciprocity: What becomes possible when the vision, care and work are truly shared?

Relating Through the Unseen: 12th House

The Twelfth House brings Libra into solitude, spirituality, the unconscious, rest, endings and what cannot always be resolved through direct conversation. Old relational experiences may continue living quietly within us. Here we have to realize peace does not require agreement, renewed contact or a beautifully tied bow.

Orientation: What unfinished relational experience is still asking for my compassionate attention?

Reciprocity: How can I restore relationship with the parts of myself I left behind while trying to maintain connection with someone else?

Peace is Different From Keeping the Peace

Libra season asks us to discern between creating peace and keeping the peace.

Keeping the peace con become a performance, a coping skill that helped us survive challenging moments when we were younger. We anticipate reactions. We soften the truth until it is barely recognizable. We take responsibility for the tone, timing, interpretation and emotional outcome of every conversation. We preserve the connection, but we may not actually be present within it.

Creating peace is very different. This creation requires saying what is true before resentment takes over. It involves allowing another person to have their feelings without rushing to make those feelings disappear It requires an apology and showing up to repair. Peace asks us to recognize that reciprocity sometimes is not possible in certain relationships no matter how hard we try or beautifully we communicate.

Peace, she will not ask us to bypass pain or even make things beautiful before it is ready. The promise of peace becomes possible when we learn to remain in a health and compassionate relationship with ourselves through the complexity of being human – and when our relationships make room for that self to exist.

A Libra Rising Reflection

Often I have been more comfortable at holding space for others than asking for another to hold space for me. As a yoga teacher, counselor, coach, mother and guide, noticing other people is part of what I do naturally and part of what I deeply value. I genuinely am curious about the human experience and can sense complexity, see more than one side and believe relationship has the power to create radical change.

One thing I learned is the being good at holding relationship is not a guarantee for reciprocal relationship. There have been occasions when being the one that understands it can be mean you become the person few remember to understand. Competence sometimes disguises need – and we all need one another. Shoot, I have even been told I am the most peaceful person they know (this is not my husband or my children mind you) but this in no way means that just because someone is capable and caring they don’t require little in return.

These have been some of my own hard knocks of life. Which is why I know first hand how important self trust is, that it truly is essential. Not just because I can present immense amounts of evidence and research that supports this to be a major element of psychological well being but because I too have had to recognize this in my own life.

Knowing my own needs, recognizing them before they turn into depletion.

Naming what matters without waiting for someone to notice or ask.

Allowing for disappointment to give me the data rather than feeling responsible or explaining it away.

Trusting that a relationship that is capable of holding my turret is more peaceful than one maintained through my silence.

Ha! I am far from having this perfected nor can I have perfect responses. They actually inform the values in the relationship I continue to cultivate with my own life. This could be a big reason this season promises more peace than balance. Balance implies I will eventually arrange everything correctly. Perhaps the peace arises because there is the promise that the scales tip both ways and this allows us to be human inside a life that keeps moving.

The Promise of Peace

The equinox gives us the fleeting image of balance in autumn and spring. Libra gives us the relational practice that carries us forward when the scales inevitably move again.

Equanimity allows us to stay present without demanding that nothing changes. Reciprocity allows care to breathe in more than one direction. Trust allows us to listen inwardly while remaining open to what another person brings. Beauty reminds us that even at the threshold of closure, life is still offering something worthy of our attention. And peace helps us turn toward what is ending while remaining open to renewal.

Some good questions to reflect upon through Libra season:

Where am I being invited to create peace rather than merely preserve harmony?

What helps me remain trustworthy to myself while in relationship with others?

Where is care moving reciprocally, and where have I become responsible for sustaining the entire exchange?

What is reaching completion and what space might that ending be preparing?

What form of beauty helps me meet this season with greater presence?

The scales will move because they are supposed to move. The invitation is not to force them into, or control stillness. It is to become more responsive, more honest and more rooted in the relationship we carry everywhere – the relationship with ourselves.

Where is Libra in Your Chart?

If these Libra reflections have you wondering where reciprocity, relational trust, beauty or peace live within your own chart, a Celestial Orientation Session offers a place to begin.

In these sessions I do not use the chart to predict the future or prescribe who you should become. Together we use the symbolism and metaphor as a reflective landscape. A way of becoming curious about what is already true, what is asking for your attention and how you want to participate more authentically in the life and relationships you are creating.

They are not about achieving perfect balance and far from calling in urgency to become someone new – even if we are restless for change. They help us understand where we are not, exploring what is being experienced in relationship, what matters (because this always matters), connect with what allows you to trust in yourself and get to know the kind of reciprocity you are ready to create and receive.

The invitation this season is to meet yourself more fully, relate more honestly and turn toward the peace that becomes possible when you no longer have to abandon yourself in order to belong.

From my heart to yours – take what serves!
