Shine from the Heart

There is something unmistakable about midsummer. It is as if nature offers each of us a brilliant reminder or permission to shine from the heart! This happens to be the theme of Leo season!!!

Gardens are alive with color. Fruit trees are heavy with sweetness. Wildflowers bloom without hesitation. The sun lingers a little longer, inviting us to slow down, gather, and simply be present with the fullness of life.

Nature has not set some goal to become beautiful. She is simply expressing the truth of what she already is. Shining her truth out because she can and that truth is nourishing to me and so many of you!

In the work I do as a therapist, I often find myself gently reminding people that therapeutic process is not about becoming someone new or letting go of what has made you exactly who you are. It is a process where we get to remember who we are beneath the expectations, responsibilities, grief, and protective patterns that have accumulated over time. We aren’t searching for a better version of ourselves—we are orienting ourselves back to the truth of who we have always been.

Astrology As Caring to Shine

This is why I choose to approach astrology as an act of care. For me it isn’t about prediction or fate (though the planets move in a timely order whether we want them to or not). For me it is a practice of awareness, support and well, orientation. In this 12 part series of astrology as care – we start with Leo season as the theme of this energy is a nudge to shine from our heart!

The sky offers us a rhythm to move with, reminding us that our lives unfold in seasons just as nature does. Each season invites us to cultivate a different aspect of ourselves with greater awareness, compassion, and intention. I think of this and frame it as celestial nourishment—allowing the wisdom of the heavens to gently support a life of authentic alignment.

The Sun: Our Living Center

The Sun is the heart of our solar system. And in mid summer the sun is the source of our warmth and playfulness. In the beautiful system of astrology the sun rules Leo. Leo also represents that permission, even encouragement to allow our heart to shine.

Just as every planet finds its relationship to the Sun, our inner lives are continually seeking their own center. The Sun represents our life force, our vitality, our creative essence, and the part of us that quietly says, This is who I am.

Letting the performance part of our self be and instead allowing a remembrance of our selves.

When we are oriented toward our inner Sun, we begin making choices that arise from authenticity rather than obligation. We create from joy and contribute to the world around us with a full heart because we know we belong by being just who we are. There is even research supporting the power of self-connection and authentic alignment! 

The Sun reminds us that our light is ever present, even though it can feel hidden at times, clouded by a storm, our light still shines. We tend to our light because it is our life even though it can be both hard and a total delight!

Leo: The Heart in Full Bloom

Leo arrives in the height of summer, when life has moved beyond possibility and into expression. Not to mention it is crazy hot for most of us.

As a fixed fire sign, Leo teaches us to sustain the creative spark that spring first ignited. This is the steady flame of the heart that sustains the warmth that nourishes relationships, creativity, generosity, delight, courage, and wholehearted self-expression.

Have you ever thought how a sunflower never apologizes for turning toward the light? That a rose never questions whether it deserves to bloom?

Nature simply becomes more fully itself and this is the invitation that comes with Leo energy.

Leo’s wisdom isn’t found in seeking attention or recognition. Leo’s wisdom is found in the quiet dignity of living from the heart – connecting to yourself and shining from this point within. When the sun moves through Leo we are provided with a yearly reminder that our authentic presence is enough and that our uniqueness is not something to hide, but something to lovingly cultivate.

When we honor ourselves with compassion and integrity, we naturally create space for others to do the same. Also, everyone has Leo energy in their natal chart!

The Celestial Invitation – Self Connection

As I write this we are in Leo season and this year carries an especially meaningful invitation.

Jupiter, the energetic symbolism of benevolence and expansion, is currently traveling through Leo. Jupiter in Leo amplifies these themes of creativity, generosity, courage, and wholehearted living. Wherever Jupiter travels, it encourages growth by expanding into what is already true.

Perhaps the cosmos are whispering: Trust your gifts. Honor your heart. Share your light.

The heavens know the world benefits when you become more fully yourself. There is a saying – the universe is anxiously awaiting for you to become exactly who you are!

What if we let ourselves this season as an expression of self-connection, self-love, self-honor, dignity, and belonging. Letting go of the need to be seen, applauded and congratulated and just allowing ourselves to shine brilliantly – together.

The Gift of the Full Moon

Every Leo season offers an Aquarius Full Moon. This is one of astrology’s quiet reminders that we are never growing in isolation and how consistent the cosmos have been since the beginning of time. 

While the Sun illuminates Leo, inviting us to reconnect with the creative center of our own hearts, the Moon reflects its light through Aquarius, revealing the larger story we may not yet see.

Leo energy asks Who am I?

Aquarius gently wonders, How does my authentic self nourish the whole?

The Full Moon often illuminates what has been hidden or is hiding. Sometimes our awareness has grown or perhaps it provides the reflection necessary to receive the truth of who we are. 

Belonging Through Relationship

During Leo season, what comes into view is often our relationship between individuality and community, self-expression and contribution, personal joy and collective flourishing. We begin to recognize that these are not opposing forces. They complete one another. This is true for every sign in the zodiac, there is an equal and opposite energy that completes the other. Every zodiac season holds a dialogue of where the opposing energy is actually a complimentary perspective. 

The more deeply we honor our own nature, the more generously we can participate in the lives of others.

This is a cornerstone of the work I offer. You see the communities we build become strongest when every individual is welcomed in the fullness of who they are.

We are not here to lose ourselves in the collective. Nor are we here to shine only for ourselves. We are here to remember that authentic belonging begins with authenticity itself.

Where Does Leo Live in Your Life?

Everyone is unique and astrology validates this as every birth chart is also unique.

And while we all experience Leo season together, each of us are invited to express this energy through a different area of life.

The house Leo occupies in your chart reveals where your heart naturally longs to create, where vitality grows when nurtured, and where your authentic light most wants to be shared.

You may find this to be through relationships. Or perhaps through meaningful work, family, creativity, community, or spiritual practice.

One of my favorite interpretations comes from astrologer Anne Ortelee, who reminds us that the house Leo rules is where we are meant to shine.

I love her offering because it shifts our attention away from personality and toward purpose. It becomes less about being a Leo and more about recognizing where life is inviting us to express ourselves with greater courage and authenticity.

For me, Leo rules my Eleventh House. The house of community, shared vision, hopes for the future, and collective belonging. It reminds me that our light is never meant to exist in isolation. We shine most brilliantly when we encourage one another to come alive, offering our unique gifts in service of something larger than ourselves. 

Leo Through the Houses

Each house describes a landscape of life. Leo shows where your heart longs to create, where vitality naturally grows, and where your light most wants to be shared. 

Rising/1st House: Shining through Presence

Your light begins with simply being yourself. You nourish others through authenticity, warmth, confidence, and the courage to show up as you are.

Orientation: How might I trust that my presence is enough?

2nd House: Shining through Value

Your gifts become tangible through what you create, cultivate, and value. Abundance grows when your creativity is honored rather than minimized.

Orientation: What gifts deserve to be valued—including me?

3rd House: Shining through Voice

Words become your offering. Teaching, storytelling, writing, conversation, and curiosity become pathways for sharing your light.

Orientation: What truth wants to be spoken with warmth and courage?

4th House: Shining through Belonging

Home becomes a sanctuary where your heart can fully rest. The sense of warmth you offer creates spaces where others feel safe enough to become themselves.

Orientation: What allows me to feel deeply at home within myself?

5th House: Shining through Creation

This is Leo’s natural home! Joy, artistry, romance, children, play, and wholehearted creativity become expressions of your life’s energy..

Orientation: What delights my heart simply because it is alive?

6th House: Shining through Devotion

Daily life becomes sacred. Even ordinary routines become expressions of care when infused with purpose and creativity.

Orientation: How can my everyday rhythms nourish my vitality rather than deplete it?

Relationships become mirrors that invite authentic presence. Love flourishes when both people are free to shine without diminishing themselves.

Your light reaches places others tend to and often fear. Courage can grow through vulnerability, grief, intimacy, healing, and emotional honesty.

Expansion of your light happens through learning, wisdom, travel, philosophy, spirituality, and lifelong discovery. The invitation is to become a guide by continuing to be a student.

Recognition follows authenticity rather than ambition alone and your work or purpose become an extension of your own heart. Legacy is built through meaningful contribution.

Orientation: What contribution feels deeply aligned with who I truly am?

This is where your light becomes larger than yourself. Your creativity nourishes communities. Your joy inspires collective possibility. Your heart contributes to a future you may never fully see, planting seeds for generations to come.

Our hopes become shared possibilities, and our creativity becomes nourishment for the collective.

12th House: Shining through Surrender

Sometimes light grows quietly. Here creativity is nourished through solitude, contemplation, imagination, dreams, and communion with something greater than the self. The heart remembers that it does not create alone.

The Sun Simply Shines

Leo energy reminds us that the Sun never strives to become the Sun. Nope the sun simply shines. In the same way, our authentic light emerges naturally when we live from the heart, create with courage, and allow ourselves to be fully seen. 

A humanistic approach to astrology offers an orientation toward this inner light, while celestial nourishment reminds us to tend it with care. When we remember our own radiance, we make it easier for others to remember theirs. Together, we create a life that is not only aligned, but brilliantly alive.

Living Brilliantly Together

Why do I return to astrology again and again. Because it continues to orient me toward the questions that matter most and then helps me hone in on what I need to focus on in that area.

How do I care for myself with greater compassion?

What truly nourishes my soul?

Where am I living in alignment with my deepest values?

What wants to come alive through me?

In no way are these simply astrological questions – they are deeply human ones. Ones that also sit at the core of my therapeutic work.

Astrology As A Companion

Right now my hope is that astrology becomes a gentle companion to you in your own journey. I am not interested in predicting or telling you who you should become, but something that lovingly reminds you of who you already are. An affirmation of your truth.

Authentic alignment is about living from the center of your own heart. Forget perfection, be perfectly you with all the imperfections (which astrology will also point out – lol)!

Honestly, I believe healing unfolds in a very similar way.

Self-love becomes self-honor. Self-honor becomes dignity. Dignity creates belonging. Belonging allows each of us to shine without diminishing the light of anyone else.

Perhaps this is the real invitation of Leo season. An invitation to offer yourself the same permission that nature gives every flower, every tree, and every golden summer afternoon—to become the fullest expression of who you already are.

When we do, our own light stops competing and begins connecting.

Honoring this invitation together, we create a world where we can all live a little more authentically, a little more courageously, and a little more brilliantly.

A Personal Invitation

This Leo season, notice where your heart naturally comes alive – what brings you or allows you to be in joy?

Pay attention to what brings delight, what stirs your creativity, and where you feel most authentically yourself. 

Then, as the Aquarius Full Moon rises, ask yourself: How does my light become nourishment for others? 

Nourishing others because I am more fully myself. Because when each of us tends the unique light we’ve been given individually, we create communities where everyone has permission to shine. 

Just like the night sky – they shine brilliantly together illuminating the darkness and creating constellations and alignment that guide us forward. 

We shine brilliantly together not by being the same but by being courageously and so – fully ourselves.

A Deeper Invitation

Beyond the rhythms of the season, there is another celestial invitation quietly unfolding. This offering as a whole is about becoming a wholehearted participant in a more connected, compassionate world.  The focus is on human development and astrology serves as a compassionate companion – there is just so much to be shared!

The nodes of fate, which can help us find direction, just shifted. The North Node know officially moves through Aquarius calling a push where our collective orientation begins to shift toward new ways of belonging. The North Node does not ask us to abandon who we are or even forget where we came from. It actually invites us to grow into qualities that expand both our individual lives and our shared humanity.

Because Leo energy reminds us to tend the flame of our own heart, Aquarius asks us to carry that light into community. There is a strong call contribute rather than compare. To collaborate rather than compete. To recognize that our uniqueness is not separate from the collective—it is our contribution to it.

Does this feel deeply hopeful – or is it just me?

Awareness, healing and growth/purpose/meaning are all relational. We come to know ourselves in the company of others even in the company of our environment. We actually become more of ourselves when we get our of our comfort zone. We discover our gifts not by hiding them, but by offering them. We build communities where everyone belongs by allowing each person to arrive as they truly are.

Perhaps this is why the timing feels so significant. Leo season reminds us to become fully ourselves. The Aquarius North Node reminds us why.

Not so we can shine alone, but so we can live brilliantly together.

A Personal Reflection

Writing these words I realize they are an invitation not only for you, but for me.

For most of my life, I have been more comfortable holding space for others than stepping into the light myself. As a yoga teacher I was gifted at bringing you home to your body through movement aligned with the energy of the room. As a therapist, my work has often lived quietly behind the walls of my office one conversation, one story, one sacred relationship at a time.

Now this season feels different. Perhaps that is the invitation of Leo. Perhaps it is because I am now an officially independently licensed professional mental health counselor in the state of Kentucky!

Perhaps it is Jupiter’s encouragement to trust the gifts we’ve cultivated over a lifetime. Perhaps it is the North Node in Aquarius gently reminding us that our individual light is meant to contribute to something larger than ourselves.

Whatever the reason, I find myself saying yes to becoming more visible. Visible because I deeply believe this work matters.

Believing Deeply in Permission to Shine

I believe we are longing for places where we can slow down, reconnect with ourselves, and remember that we belong.
