Virgo Season: Tending the Divine Details
After the brightness of Leo season where we are offered the invitation to shine from the heart, inhabit our creative vitality and allow ourselves to be seen, Virgo season brings us back to the earth tending the divine details of what has come alive.
The arrival of Virgo energy happens as summer begins to fade and we still feel the heat yet start to sense the subtle dissolve into fall. The light starts changing. Rhythms of daily life begin to reorganize. We might even notice how what was expansive now asks to become more intentional. That slow fun of summer shifted and asks us to get organized, harvest the joy, and build structure to contain our essence.
Virgo Details Sacred Refinement
Come mid August through Virgo’s symbolism we are invited through Astrology as Care to engage in a season of sacred refinement. Sacred refinement is an energetic invitation to tend to the divine details of our lives. A window of opportunity to bring our attention to the practices, routines, choices and structures that support our health and wellbeing. The refinement reminds us that what we create requires care. Not just some inspiration as that alone is not enough. We subtly recognize (if we choose to be aware of the divine details) that something must hold what has been brought to life with the radiance of the sun.
Astrology as care brings out that subtle awareness to this sacred rhythm that ultimately supports the coherence we crave.
Leo energy provides the fire that sustains us and our lives. Virgo energy gathers the evidence, or rather materials, to become the hearth of that authentic and radiant fire.
The Hearth of the Sacred Spark
Containing a sacred spark is no easy task! Choosing to sit with the evidence of our miraculous lives, or we could frame this to say we take note of the data that supports a deeper level of devotion, asks us to be both intentional and create room for discernment. The hearth of the spark brings a container that allows for an inquiry of refinement. That inquiry requests a self inventory.
What is working/serving my truth?
What is not serving me?
What is actually supporting me?
What requires more attention?
What am I continuing simply because I have always done it this way?
Virgo energy collects the evidence from the material of our life’s story (aka personal experience). She organizes what has been learned and creates structures that are dependable enough to hold steady. Interesting right! This is a time to recognize that when we orient towards a celestial nourishment perspective, we notice how we are actually given the resources to hold steady even as the season begins to dissolve into something new all around us.
Steadfast Devotion
Something I have considered for sometime is how this points to devotion, a steadfast devotion that nudges us to trust in the unseen and honor the mystery. Poetically cool, right? Except it can be uncomfortable and stir up discomfort which is not necessarily anything we want to hear. Most of us like to be in control, so trusting the unseen and honoring the mystery pushes us outside our comfort zone!
Traditionally Virgo energy is associated with service and even sacrifice. Most of us learned this concept through putting everyone else’s needs and everything before our own. Think pleaser, being a ‘good girl’ and the stoic martyr that abandon’s her own needs to be seen and validated of her dignity and worth.
That sounds pretty full on but a lot of us were taught to prioritize the needs of others without having needs ourselves. But we all have needs, so we trust that dismissing our inner wisdom is the ‘right thing’ to do. A truly bizarre concept when we read these words, but the pattern perpetuates, especially for the care taker. A core element of our sense of self is we all need to be needed.
What happens when we dismiss our needs to validate our worth and dignity to gather the evidence to be needed…. We get caught in a painful loop of sacrifice. Sacrifice in the name of service. Interesting note, the word sacred is associated with sacrifice as well. Not only does this ultimately cause harm and is pretty painful, it just isn’t sustainable.
Sacred Beauty
The idea of taking care of one another is deeply sacred. We actually are hard wired to need each other, to be in relationship, to have companionship. It is important to not abandon this core need of our vital selves.
Being there for one another and helping the world be a better place is a sacred beauty in human life. But serving from an empty cup, being depleted, completely exhausted, unable to do enough is so over rated. Giving everything and leaving nothing for one’s self is no longer beautiful or glamorous. Living from this orientation is far from sustainable and ultimately becomes sacrificial of our own light. My hope is we can still be of service without it having to be a sacrifice. Without it causing harm to ourselves.
Historical Patterns
Let me slow down for a moment and briefly explore how humanity had to sustain itself. Before the modern conveniences of electricity (thank you Uranus!) civilization had to have a way to protect the fire that sustained warmth. The center of the village would protect this sacred spark. Think way back to how life operated when the sun went down, it was very dark at home. (So dark that you could see the fire of the stars much more clearly – just saying).
It was a time where there was no show to watch, no video game to play, the work of the day had to be complete. If you were to still have a life after sundown, it was via lanterns and candlelight. Life held greater hardship mandating room to slow down.
History held a pattern that survival required vitality to be contained and tended to every moment of the day. Humanity had to be devoted to the light. There were no other options and the way we live in modern times wasn’t even a thought, vision or concept. The resources were there to create electricity as lightening existed, someone just hadn’t experimented with these resources just yet.
Now I have reduced history to a basic but sophisticated example of being of service was needed for survival but it was done without sacrifice. This historical pattern gives us the symbolism of holding at our core a connection to contain the sacred light.
A Digestive Pause
First let’s pause for how marvelous the human mind is and recognize those that were willing to step outside of the box to help advance our experience of life here on mother earth! They give us the permission to do life a tad bit differently to improve the days of our lives.
Not only does Virgo give us this idea of steadfast devotion to honor and hold that sacred light that sustains our lives. There is another dimension of Virgo that is also important and that is the relationship with digestion. Digestion of nourishment and of narrative.
Virgo’s Nourishment
Virgo’s symbolism is also represented in the grain that comes from the wheat plant. A kernel or keeping in this devotional idea, a divine offering of the earth, that can be milled or worked with so we have the ingredients to create flour that can turn into bread. That kernel turned to bread symbolizes nourishment. The grain of wheat is literally feeding us to support our wellbeing and strength. It just isn’t that simple. We have to slow down to call in patience, gather the harvest, and put forward quite a bit of effort.
To receive nourishment, we have to tend to the details of our existence.
Virgo nourishes our health and wellbeing through digestion through the physical body. But I am going to take this a little further and broaden our horizon.
Virgo’s Divine Details
Have you noticed how we are constantly taking in life. Information. Experiences. Relationships. Conversations. Sensations. Ideas. Disappointments. Beauty. Grief. Possibility. All of this comes at us fast, almost relentlessly fast. Seldom do we slow down to recognize or even notice how quickly life happens.
Something is also happening around what we take in. Science reminds us how cool our brain is. Neuroscience knows we are taking in more data than we can even comprehend. We are hard wired to process, filter and integrate at a rapid rate. Sensation is raw data your body collects and we perception allows us to register a tiny fraction of that data. So there is huge amount of data our brains scan before we actually decide to pay attention.
Virgo’s Fantastically Fast Filter
This filtering happens so fast, in milliseconds, our senses take in raw signals of an event. The brain sorts through it, filters and evaluates for threats or changes. Then in a radically fast amount of time we are handed information that reaches our conscious awareness. Perhaps a philosophical stretch, but these details are deeply divine.
Staying within the scope of this post, our conscious mind then has a simple opportunity to digest. We can be more intentional and contemplate, decide what is useful, what belongs to us, what needs to be released and what might become part of who we are. Which to me is like crazy when you think about it. Because eventually, something new emerges from what we have metabolized.
Turning back to Virgo symbolism we see how we can continue with the fact that there is a process of cognitive nourishment through digesting information. We consume, digest, and metabolize our sensory events as daily engagements. Which we could rant on how unconscious most people are because on some level it is exhausting to roll this deep. But I digress.
Virgo’s Pause As Sacred Care
Looking through the lens of Astrology as Care, Virgo asks us to become more discerning about where our energy goes and how we digest our lives. This time of year gives us a chance to focus our attention on these areas or energetic input and output and reflect on how this appears in our lives.
How can I be of service without dismissing my own needs?
What am I devoted to and does the way I am living reflect that devotion?
This is where discernment becomes an act of care as the discernment gives us a chance to digest and utilize the energy we are cultivating wisely.
Mercury Allows Virgo’s Discernment
While there are quite the arguments and concepts here, it is essential to come back to a core technicality. Astrology is vast, deep and woven together in such a magnificent and divine manner. For example each zodiacal sign is ruled by a planet and Virgo is ruled by Mercury.
Since we have explored the way in which we collect and engage with the evidence of our lives, maybe now we can see how Virgo’s relationship with Mercury holds significant meaning not just arbitrary information.
A Few Technicalities
Mercury as a planet moves quickly. It, because Mercury is non-binary, is the planet closest to the sun. Their fast pace is why this planet appears to go backwards 3 times a year also known as (aka) Mercury retrograde.
Symbolically this energy moves quickly across the surface, gathering information, making connections and noticing details. And another layer, Mercury also has an ancient relationship with thresholds. They hold the capacity to move between what is visible and what lies beyond, even beneath the surface of what is known/sensed.
Mercury’s Refinement
The mercurial flavor is another expression of Virgo’s sacred refinement. Beneath our behaviors are motivations. Beneath our actions are expectations, histories, patterns, desires and ways of understanding ourselves and the world.
When we give those deeper layers our attention, experience can begin to become something more than information. Experience becomes data that allows for insight. And insight, when given somewhere to live, holds the potential to become refined wisdom. An esoteric concept that I am going to immensely simplify though highly contemplated, states that knowledge layered with experience allows for wisdom to surface.
Our ordinary, every day material world is never only what appears on the surface.
That Technical Relationship
Understanding Virgo helps us understand Mercury. Understanding Mercury helps us understand Virgo. Back to a quick technical note, Mercury also rules Gemini, another mutable sign. However Gemini is an elemental expression of air that works totally different as Virgo is a mutable earth energy. Cool relationship, completely different expressions. Perhaps we could say – same but different.
Regardless, Mercury here brings out an earthly rhythm that is important in the Celestial Nourishment philosophy aka Astrology As Care framework. By living life we orient toward something in, then give it our attention, discern what belongs as we digest what we have experienced and finally we align with what we want to carry forward to the rest of our days.
This is major evidence or rather technical relationship of a holistic approach. The mind cannot operate without a relationship with the body, heart and soul. This relationship allows for cognitive health.
Without the body or physical vessel, a Mercurial mind will move non stop. When unconscious or no place to land, the mind will relentlessly continue analyzing, questioning, criticizing and gathering more and more information. (Ha ha, kind of like this post). Thoughts turn inward upon themselves and what began as discernment can become ungrounded and turn into rumination, constriction or collapse. Anyone here ever over analyze to the point of paralysis?
Mind Body Connection – Mercury Style
Here is some good news, when the mind remains connected to the body and oriented toward the soul, a contemplative practice provides an intentional pause. This focused attention can actually become generative.
Embodiment, or the integration of our whole connected self, brings forward an opportunity. Something opens up because what we gathered can now reorganize into understanding. Without going into more neuroscience, this is what is called processing.
Understanding requires space to process. This processing provides creative expression even if that is just enough clarity to choose with greater authenticity. What has been cultivated inwardly, when done consciously, eventually moves outward in service to something we genuinely care about.
Virgo’s Ultimatum
Now this is my own contemplation and a play on words because Virgo is just Virgo – there is no ultimatum. But after years of collecting data about the body, mind, heart and soul it is hard for me to not sit with the idea that Virgo ultimately asks us to practice, even embody, a sacred refinement of the divine details of our life. It isn’t pointless as we aren’t simply taking in more data expanding our minds nor are challenges in life limiting our ability to engage in the material world. Hopefully at this point it doesn’t present such a stretch, but Virgo is ultimately asking us to become discerning about what we allow ourselves to metabolize.
What are we consuming/taking in?
What are we carrying? (Is it ours to carry?)
What are we contemplating?
What are we tending?
What deserves our deeper attention?
What is ready/needing/asking to be released?
What is genuinely becoming that is ready to be offered back to the world?
Virgo’s Reminder to Become
Virgo reminds us that refinement is not solely about making our outer lives more orderly. Um this is the energy behind boundaries too by the way because boundaries are the only way we have room for the inner process as well. That refinement however gives us a chance to become creative participants in our lives.
We gather, protect, digest, discern, integrate and eventually, we create. And that energy in which we align with and authentically comes forward carries the soul’s depth from which it emerged.
The brilliance that came alive through the heart (remember Leo’s energy that came before) now asks to be examined, understood, articulated and organized. The hard part, or what I like to call divine paradox, is the quick movement that causes an active mind, when ungrounded becomes really disruptive.
Enough Already
There is endless potential and without healthy awareness and boundaries the mind notices everything. Everything becomes endless and can cause us to spiral out of control. The constant investigation, over analyzing and recognizing/obsessing about patterns. Cool part is this is a major function of the brain which feeds the nervous system. Except unchecked we start to believe and feel like the only way to be of service we (our minds) have to identify, over process and perhaps even obsess about what could be improved.
All the sudden, this beautiful capacity for discernment maladapts and turns into criticism, judgement and even skepticism. Which is tough because the brain is hard wired to be negative to keep us safe. So that safety can easily backfire and turn on us causing excessive worry, fear of loosing control and high levels of apprehension that impede our ability to make a choice and take action. See, such a paradox!
Nuance Turns Neurotic
When the mind constantly notices what could be better can easily begin believing that nothing is ever quite good enough. We get caught up in perfection and hyper focused on what has to be. Spinning into one more adjustment to make. One more piece of information to gather. One more thing to organize before we begin. This nuance becomes neurotic! (And I am noticing as I write all of this even my nervous system is getting charged)!
Mercury is a trickster after all. Causing us to mental spin out and hear the inner team of critic, judgement, perfection and desire to be the best version of ourselves, the internal noise screams ‘not enough’!
In a later post I will share why this is a way to shift our view point about retrograde season not being cursed. Retrograde is a blessing in disguise allowing us a chance to review, reflect and reorganize.
A Season of Just Enough
The same mind capable of investigating a problem, going into its depths and emerging with an elegant creative solution must also learn to recognize when it has gathered enough data and take the risk to act on it, even if it fails immensely.
Virgo’s seasonal invitation nudges us to release perfection and open to coherence, assimilation and integration.
Virgo doesn’t merely organize information she is energy that metabolizes experience.
Because Virgo naturally seeks to refine and organize both our inner and outer worlds (the inner knowledge and sensory experience) in such a process that the way we live becomes increasingly aligned with what actually supports us. Just enough is practical self care. Hence the title, tending the divine details – virgo season!
When we give ourselves room to be just enough, we find the meal actually gets prepared. The appointment is finally made. The calendar intentionally cleared. The cluttered workspace is organized. The value inspired boundary gets maintained. The body’s wisdom is listened to/heard. The system can be simplified. That unfinished task is now complete.
Devotion to the Divine Details
When we invite in the perspective of just enough ordinary acts become expressions of devotion, tending the divine details. Something I love to call Miracles in the Mundane that asks us to honor the tasks of our lives with care. Miracles are moments of perspective shifts where boring mundane actions actually become a devotion to the divine unfolding of life.
Being reminded that our lives are not only shaped by the grand moments of transformation, but they are also shaped by what we tend to every day may cause an eye roll, but it is a truth I am here to show up for – hence the length of this post!
Slow Your Roll
As summer begins the slow surrender into fall, we don’t have to rush toward what comes next. Remember Mercury is a threshold and perhaps this time of year is a personal threshold asking us to notice what this season has already taught us. A process of slowing our roll, tending to the divine details, and assimilating a rhythm or routine inspired by Virgo herself.
Gather the data.
Harvest the evidence.
Keep what nourishes.
Refine what needs tending.
Release what no longer deserves your precious energy.
And create structures sturdy enough to hold what you are becoming.
Tending To Our Truth
Sacred refinement is not about making yourself better. It is about tending your life well enough that more of your true self can live within this magnificent opportunity. We were given a light to shine into the world, now we get to tend to our true selves.
As I introduce this Astrology as Care framework perhaps we can see that the invitation of Virgo season through the energy she brings we get to reclaim ourselves. This self-tending asks for discernment not just judgment. That we can add more devotion and feel less pressured through obligation. We can integrate a practice of refinement rather than remain obsessed with perfection.
Gather. Harvest. Nourish.
Now we see that Virgo doesn’t merely collect data intellectually she, with Mercury’s help, actually evaluates the actual fruits of what has been cultivated. Even farmers of the Earth us this as a time of year to ask :
What did I plant?
What grew?
What didn’t?
What is worth carrying forward?
The evidence we have gathered isn’t to judge and critique our performance. The harvest helps us discern how to tend and nourish the next season.
Get a Life
While those words were the critiquing advice from my dad when he didn’t think we should be sitting around doing something he didn’t approve of or perhaps just didn’t understand (which he might be reading my words and whispering to me at this point of this post). Except I have to add this in to help you take the data presented here and apply it to your lived experience.
Plus, when we orient to our chart the and look at the cusp of each house. We can look at the Virgo-ruled house to ask for guidance and insight into how to get a life :).
This will take a little expertise and asks for an advance practice with astrology. Everyone has Virgo in their natal chart. And which house it rules depends on the time you were born. But in this system we look to the Virgo house to know how to ‘get a life’. what daily attention, discernment, skill, organization, or devotion.
Keep in mind, Virgo gathers information not simply to analyze it, but to help us locate ourselves and make an adjustment: This is where I am. This is what the evidence is showing me. What needs tending now?
Tending What Has Come Alive: Virgo Through The Houses
In astrology as care, one of the ways I like to work with the houses as a tool for orientation. Each house leads naturally into the next. Something is experienced, expressed or illuminated, and then we are asked to respond.
Just a heads up, each of our natal charts are unique and one of a kind. So while I offer a reflection through the houses as somewhat of a generalization, your own chart will personalize this and support your connection to your life specifically! If you want to know – schedule an orientation session with me!
Remember, Leo precedes Virgo and asks us to shine from the heart. So now we move through the houses asking us to tend what has come alive. Since the house Leo rules in your chart shows us where you are invited to experience your own radiance like where creative vitality, heart and authentic self-expression want room to exist.
The house Virgo rules follows with another question: What will it take to tend this radiance every day?
Virgo is often associated with work, and some astrological traditions look toward Virgo to understand the kind of work we might do. By now you probably realize I tend to think about it somewhat differently. For me, Virgo describes the effort required to get the job done – how we like to engage in life.
Dutiful Engagement
Engagement means we participate. We wake up and get to work. We roll up our sleeves, notice what needs attention, gather information, develop skill, create systems, make adjustments and return again tomorrow.
Virgo energy reminds us that what matters most also requires something from us as if it is our duty!
Virgo energy helps us orient our light in space and time. We recognize what is actually happening rather than what we hoped would happen. We refine our choices based upon what we have learned. Then we reorient ourselves toward what matters now.
Here is why this process is practical care because discernment allows us to ask not only, What needs to be done? and What is actually worthy of my energy? Will this serve me?
From Radiance to Form
Another way we can understand this rhythmic movement through the zodiac asks us to recall that Leo is solar. The sun just radiates from it’s core – where the essence is to shine and extend warmth, light, and enliven. Virgo takes this luminous energy and begins giving her form.
With Leo energy we explored how the heart knows what it loves. Creative pulse shows us what wants to emerge. There is a playfully impulse that brings a moment of clarity, inspiration or recognition. Then after Leo comes Virgo just like after the sun, the ruler of Leo, comes Mercury, the ruler of Virgo.
That divine pulse of our essence calls for a devotion to these details asking
How will you care for your light?
What structure does your essence need?
What practice supports your truth?
What information do you need to move forward?
What aspects need to be refined?
What requires simplification?
What will this require from you the ordinary everyday?
Embodied Devotion
When we look to the natal chart, this part of our essence reminds us that alignment isn’t only something recognizable in moments of profound insight. Alignment is something we get to tend through the seemingly ordinary details of our lives – again miracles in the mundane.
Virgo orients us to attend, refine, discern, organize, and develop the everyday practices that give form to what matters, embodied devotion.
Where are we being asked to roll up your sleeves and tend to the details?
Where does discernment help us recognize what is working and what needs refinement?
Where might a little more organization, attention or devotion create greater coherence?
Now go find Virgo on your chart and notice which house it occupies then find that house bellow and take this concept into consideration!
Tending the Self: 1st House
As always, the first house is all about the self. If your are a Virgo Rising, meaning Virgo rules the first house, well then, the work begins with you.
Virgo Rising (in the first house) brings attention to how you inhabit your life. The way you embody life through your body, your identity, your energy and the way you rise up to meet the world.
Virgo Rising naturally notices what could be adjusted or improved, and again this is a generalization, there is a tendency to receive the sacred beauty first. Practical care here asks you to distinguish self-awareness from constant self-correction, criticism and judgement. Just enough is clutch here.
Daily engagement requires the effort that involves tending to your physical wellbeing. Notice your needs and develop practices that help you feel more fully present within yourself, your sacred and beautiful self!
Orientation: What does the data of my lived experience provide regarding what helps me feel most like my genuine & authentic self?
Refinement: What can I tend without turning myself into a problem that needs fixing?
Tending Your Resources: 2nd House
Virgo ruling the second house brings a divine discernment to what you have, what you need and what you value. Here is where dignity and self worth reside.
Sure it is the practical work of money, possessions and resources. This also includes your gifts, skills, natural talents, time and energy. In the second house we are invited to take inventory of what is available, what am I choosing to do with what I have and what will best support me. We don’t want to just accumulate more (though more money always sounds nice) we actually want to learn how to steward what we already possess – that indeed takes work.
Orientation: What resources are actually available to me right now?
Refinement: How can I care for what I have in a way that reflects what I value?
Tending the Mind: 3rd House
The third house brings us into communication, learning, information and the rhythms of everyday life. Virgo here may have an active mind capable of noticing details, making connections and gathering enormous amounts of information. Because the third house holds a mercurial flair, that Virgo signature will create a sense of I have a lot of things to do. The way we allow for practical care comes in discerning which information deserves your attention.
Orientation: What am I repeatedly thinking about, learning and giving my attention to?
Refinement: What information is useful—and when do I know I have gathered enough?
Tending Home: 4th House
The fourth asks us to tend the foundations beneath our lives. The place we reside, the structure that houses our inner self/energy, the container that provides safety and security – where we belong.
Home, family, belonging and our inner emotional foundation require ongoing care. While this can feel matter of fact, Virgo asks us to be practical. This is expressed through literally tending a home. Because it is the foundation beneath our life, it also involves examining inherited patterns and creating daily rhythms that help you feel grounded, steady and supported. We care for our roots.
Orientation: What helps me experience home, grounding and belonging?
Refinement: What needs tending within my foundation so that it can better support the life I am creating?
Tending Creativity: 5th House
Creativity requires practice plus trust and patience. Virgo in the fifth reminds us that inspiration, pleasure, play, romance and creative expression need room within an ordinary life. All that brings you joy also requires repetition, skill development and the willingness to keep showing up. Again and again. To avoid getting caught in the perfection of the ego that drains the joy of life we are challenged by what a practice of refinement creates.
Orientation: What consistently brings me alive?
Refinement: What practice or structure would give my creativity more room to exist?
Tending Daily Life: 6th House
Virgo is at home in the terrain traditionally associated with the sixth house: daily work, routines, service, health and maintenance. Here is where we discover just how the divine details matter. Our everyday choices create the structure that holds our life. Pointing us to being devoted to the sacred beauty that is birthed through the light of leo. Practical care asks us to create rhythms of engagement that consider and include our own energy. We are reminded here how easily usefulness can become But this over-functioning and service becomes self-sacrifice.
Orientation: What are my everyday habits and responsibilities actually doing to my wellbeing?
Refinement: What needs to change so that my daily life supports me as well as the people and responsibilities I care for?
Tending Relationship: 7th House
Relationships are hard work and require maintenance. When we look at Virgo in the seventh house we notice what is happening between people. We see what works, what doesn’t, what is needed and what could improve in our relationships. Practical care employs discernment to ask where our own responsibility ends and another person’s begins. We can evaluate if there is reciprocity and alliance. We can become incredibly attentive within relationships and we want to watch the tendency to manage the relationship, or the other person, where we are over accommodating.
Orientation: What does the evidence of my relationships show me about how I connect?
Refinement: What is mine to tend within relationship, and what belongs to someone else?
Tending What We Share: 8th House
The every mysterious eighth house takes us beneath the surface into intimacy, vulnerability, shared resources, loss, trust and transformation. It is where the harvest has ended and the field is put to rest to restore and provide opportunity for the next crop. Virgo here can get caught in needing or wanting to understand what is complex, hidden even emotionally charged. There can be an instinct to investigate extensively, gathering enough information to make what feels uncertain more manageable. While my problem solving friends won’t like this – not everything can be solved.
The practical care Virgo asks for in this house is the work around learning how to remain present with complexity while tending carefully to what is actually within our control. Employing boundaries with just enough refinement.
Orientation: What becomes visible when I look beneath the surface?
Refinement: What is mine to understand, organize or tend—and what must I allow to remain uncertain?
Tending Meaning: 9th House
Beliefs bring meaning to life and also require discernment. Virgo in the ninth asks us to examine the philosophies, teachings and stories that have helped us understand our lives. Learning, travel, spirituality, philosophy and encounters with different perspectives provide information. Virgo wants to know what remains useful once those ideas meet lived experience. We take the knowledge and live it because wisdom becomes something practiced and embodied rather than merely believed.
Orientation: What have my experiences taught me about what I believe?
Refinement: Which beliefs still support the person I am becoming, and which ones need reconsideration?
Tending Contribution: 10th House
When we are at the top of the chart in the 10th house, Virgo brings her attention toward vocation, responsibility, leadership and the contribution we make within the world. The legacy we leave behind to inform those that are yet to come. Here there is a strong desire to do meaningful work and to do it well. In true Girl Scout Fashion. Integrity matters. Competence matters. Reliability matters. Being useful matters. The practical care is to act responsibly so that our contribution does not require endless labor.
Orientation: What am I actually contributing through the way I currently work and lead?
Refinement: What structures would allow my contribution to be both meaningful and sustainable?
Tending the Collective Vision: 11th House
Community doesn’t sustain itself, we need each other to even have community. When Virgo influences the eleventh house, the practical care asks us to recognize how the work required can turn a shared vision into something where people, humanity, can actually belong, not just now but moving forward.
This work involves organizing, connecting, coordinating and identifying what a community or collective needs in order to function without somehow becoming responsible for everyone. Cooperation is key.
Orientation: Where am I investing my energy within community, friendship and collective vision?
Refinement: What is mine to contribute and what becomes possible when the work is shared?
Tending the Unseen: 12th House
Virgo enters very different terrain in the twelfth house as this has us 180º from where Virgo energy feels most comfortable. Virgo is a sign that wants to identify, organize and refine. In the 12th house she finds herself within the house boundless energy. Where aspects that are difficult to define like the unconscious, imagination, spirituality, solitude, surrender and the parts of life that exist beyond our immediate understanding. Virgo here is almost a quiet duty.
Practical care asks for reflection, retreat, creative practice, contemplation and intentional periods of withdrawal, like ritual, become containers for what we can’t always explain.
Virgo does not have to make the unseen completely understandable. Instead, it can create practices that allow us to remain in relationship with mystery. This is where the work is to honor the mystery daily.
Orientation: What becomes visible when I give myself enough quiet to notice what is happening beneath the surface?
Refinement: What practices help me give form to what I sense without requiring myself to fully explain it?
Disclaimer: Virgo rules my 12th house, (which might be why this post feels endless – lol). Also, I truly have devoted my entire life trying to help people and myself embody the deeper mystery of existence!
Going Deeper
Now that you have some data to support the house Virgo rules in your own chart, rather than asking only What kind of practical work do I do here?, consider this…
What am I being asked to tend here?
What kind of effort does this area of my life require from me?
What does the evidence of my lived experience tell me is actually working?
Where might discernment help me distinguish devotion from obligation?
What needs refinement—not because it is wrong, but because I know more now?
How can I create a container here that supports what wants to remain alive?
Hopefully now it is clear that Virgo can but doesn’t want us to obsess about perfecting our lives. She actually asks us to become intimate enough with our lives to know what our own life needs – devoted to the divine details of engagement.
Wherever Virgo lives in your chart, there is something asking for your attention. Whether we use the seasonal invitation or personalize it by orienting to our natal chart, it is where we gather the evidence of our lived experience, discern what is useful, refine what is no longer working and create structures capable of supporting what matters.
Virgo asks us to build a life capable of holding that light that Leo reminded us we are allowed to come alive and shine!
Self As Container
Now we see Virgo containers energy not just through a calendar, routine, organized home, or healthy habit. The devotion to the divine details gives us enough data to see the self is also the container. We are continually taking the world in, metabolizing it through body, mind, heart, and soul, and determining what we will bring back into the world.
That is where Virgo allows us to be of service and being of service becomes an expression of our soul and being useful does not mean we have to self-sacrifice.
One More Virgo Invitation: Notice What Is Completing
While I have given way more than enough information here, (direct data of Virgo ruling the 12th house here). I want to offer one more layer to orientating Astrology as Care this Virgo season.
The timing of this post happens when the lunar nodes recently shifted into the Aquarius–Leo axis. As shift that happens every 18 months. But the Aquarius North Node and Leo South Node are beginning a new collective story around belonging, individuality, creative expression and our relationship to the collective.
Except the Virgo–Pisces eclipse story is not quite finished. Here I am slowing the roll and tending to the divine details! We still have lunar eclipses across this axis. First in Pisces (days after publishing this post) and then, approximately six months later, in Virgo. Eclipses happen in pairs and this offering is another opportunity to notice what has been illuminated, released, refined or brought into greater awareness within this area of our lives. But that is enough on eclipses as that topic itself is expansive!!!
Knowing where Virgo and Pisces live within your own natal chart now holds significance. These opposite houses create an axis. So you really can’t have one without the other. The nodes don’t ask us choose one side or expression over the other. There is a duality but they exist because of their relationship with one another.
Celestial Nourishment allows us to become more aware of the relationship between them. Virgo asks us to discern, tend, organize and refine. Pisces reminds us that not everything can, nor should it, be controlled, categorized or understood.
One gives form. The other allows dissolution. Together, they invite us to consider what needs our attention and what needs our surrender.
Now as this eclipse cycle comes toward completion, you might orient yourself by asking:
Where are Virgo and Pisces in my chart?
What has been changing within these areas of my life?
What have I learned about what requires my effort and requires I acknowledge what requires my release?
What am I ready to carry forward as my attention turns toward the emerging Leo–Aquarius story?
Astrology framed this way asks us to surrender the need to control, trying to tell us or even predict what is going to happen it actually helps us notice where we are, in place and time. While it feels like we are giving up control, it actual brings us back into relationship with what we actually have control of.
Where Is Virgo in Your Chart?
Maybe you know and know you have something to work with. If you don’t, this is exactly the kind of exploration we begin in an Astrological Orientation Session.
Orientation Sessions give us a place to begin. Deepening Sessions go to the next layer for those that are familiar. These sessions allow us to work together. We use your natal chart as a reflective tool to explore your core essence, emotional landscape and the areas of life asking for greater awareness and care through dialogue.
Please know orientation sessions are person centered and are not sessions where we look for predictions. There are elections astrologers that are highly trained it just doesn’t align with my approach or values. I don’t even look to the chart to point out the stereotypes or create a prescribed version of who you are. The chart helps us orient to exactly who you are, just as you are.
Where am I?
What am I experiencing?
What is asking for my attention?
What direction do I want to go?
These questions begin a connection with your individual chart to become something you can return to, not as a set of instructions, but as a guiding map for to help us navigate life through reflection, discernment and authentic alignment.
If these Virgo reflections have you wondering what this energy looks like in your own chart, I invite you to begin with an Astrological Orientation Session.
When we know where we are we know what needs attending!
